Vendor News Reports swirled around the last release of the Greenpeace Gude to Greener Electronics (version 10) that the rating of Apple was purposefully low in order to spur action. If those reports were true, according to the latest Guide to Green Electronics (version 11) which was released on March 31st, it worked. Apple has improved.
"Apple’s score on the e-waste criteria has improved with take-back and recycling services now extended to the Asia-Pacific region, including India, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, Korea and Australia," the report's authors write. "It reports a recycling rate in 2006 of 18% as a percentage of sales 7 years ago; however, it needs to provide details on how this is calculated. Apple has set a new goal of achieving a 50% recycling rate by 2010."
Although Apple has improved, other PC manufacturers have fallen behind. The introduction to the report reads as follows.
"We're giving HP, Lenovo and Dell a penalty point in our updated guide, for breaking their promises to phase-out toxic chemicals in 2009. Of the world's five top PC makers, only Apple is truly kicking the habit. Meanwhile Philips has jumped from 15th to 4th place in the list of electronics companies who are cleaning up their act."

Do you know that the latest edition of Greenpeace's "Guide to Greener Electronics" reveals that the world's biggest PC makers (Hewlett Packard, Dell and Lenovo) have failed to improve their low scores?? For shame! As a consumer, I truly appreciate this report and although there are probably not many that make this a part of the buying decision, someday it will change and once again Greenpeace is leading the way.
