According to Gartner's latest webinar on technology trends, "Technology trends you can't afford to ignore", green IT is something you should already be doing. The webinar presents the top 10 trends that organizations must consider over the next several years, and green IT appears in many of the trends listed as well as being a trend in its own right.

Overall, the trends indicate what you could have easily guessed. Demand and variability of computing resources is increasing at an astronomical rate and better management of resources is needed to handle the requirements from an environmental and oranizational perspective. As an example, Gartner is anticipating a huge growth in data huge growth in data is 650% in next 5 years, 80% is unstructured (such as video, audio and images not stored in a database).
The presenters also talked throughout about the increasing need for facilities and IT organizations to interface and develop common goals and strategies. New requirements for better managing and reporting on usage of resources including equipment, energy and water require that not only staff work across functional boundaries but that systems interface across traditional boundaries.
According to Gartner, today you should be focused on implementing virtualization and green IT for immediate cost and flexibility benefits, storage virtualization, data de-duplication, and watching web social software.
Did you know?
According to Gartner, the typical x86 server uses 65% of the power specifications on the box while idle. This means that just having a server powered on is consuming significant resources even without any work being done. At the same time, power and cooling costs for x86 are turning out to be more than the purchase price in less than three years, and in some cases in 18 months. This means that in the total cost of ownership model, the cost of operations has already surpassed the cost of purchase. A reversal of traditional trends. This underscores the imperative to manage operations in a more efficient way.
For my summary of these trends and the green perspective within each, read the my post "Gartner's top 10 trends, green computing big" on the Terrablog.

As the targets are posted on the website, organizations who would like to use the targets but are not comfortable committing publicly, the Initiative is an excellent information source. The sexy lingerieimpact of the initiative is yet to be seen as there are questions as to the motives of the companies behind the Initiative. Other initiatives encouraging companies tolingerie commit to principles or broad goals voluntarily have had varying degrees of success and generally become obsolete once the initiative’s goals become part of mainstream management goals.
