IT industries are on track to get a standard for measuring their carbon footprint. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), a UN agency representing global communication and IT industries, expects to finalise a new global standard for IT organizations’ carbon emissions next month.
Once finalised, this global standard will ensure IT organizations can measure their carbon footprints more effectively. As well, this standard will ensure IT businesses can use the same methodologies to accurately measure and compare their carbon figures.
The ITU hopes the new standard will help bring awareness to how information and communication technologies can contribute to lowering businesses’ carbon emissions.
As IT operations are known for contributing 2 per cent of global carbon emissions, standardization will greatly aid IT and communications industries in measuring and lowering their carbon footprint.
